There were many different ideas during the initial brainstorming of the design. Some of the ideas included the different engine cycles for the feed system:

Different cooling systems, such as use of ceramics, regenerative cooling, and ablative cooling. In terms of throttling the engine, multiple nozzle design was considered but rejected as a simpler solution was found.
